Description: Migrant women are involved in complex and dynamic work when theymother. This process occurs between two, apparently, relatively stablesites of belonging, the ‘here’ and the ‘there’. While this certainly capturespart of the processes of making home in which migrant mothers are engaged, itdoes not quite get at the messy, dynamic nature of the reproductive processesand practices involved (talking daily on Skype, shifting between languages, answering in the right language, crying, leaking, vomiting in a foreign space,in a foreign culture). The question is not only how migrant mothers areconstrained by pre-existing structures in their agency, but also, how weunderstand both structures and agents of belonging as messy and dynamicentanglements of constraint and enablement, being and becoming, movement andinhabitance. The lonely process of mothering a child in a foreign country.
